Why Visit an Art Museum? — Kandrac & Kole Interior Design

Summer is flying by and one thing I suggest you do if you live in Atlanta or visiting the area, is to visit the Vik Muniz exhibit at the High Museum of Art. The exhibit is in it's final weeks and closes on August 21, 2016.

I was introduced to this amazing artist by Vern Yip when we were lucky enough to be invited to dinner at his home with Fabricut , one of our favorite fabric lines during the 2015 Design Blogger's Conference. You can read that blog post HERE!

He and his husband are big art collectors. I was very intrigued by a particular piece in their collection. The piece is called The Raft of the Medusafrom Pictures of Chocolate by Vik Muniz. He does photographic representations of work using ordinary objects such as industrial garbage, peanut butter and jelly, wire, sugar, chocolate and grains of sand.

I was so excited to take my granddaughter to experience this interesting art medium. The first piece we saw was a self portrait of Muniz himself.

When you look closely, this is what you see:

Muniz's use of junk and garbage as building materials for his compositions is truly amazing. To make his Pictures of Junk and Pictures of Garbage series, he placed his camera on a platform raised by a crane high above a warehouses floor. Using the open space below as a canvas, he arranged debris into sculptural compositions.

We were pleasantly surprised to see that there was also an Eric Carle exhibit. This exhibit runs through January 8, 2017. I have fond memories of reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, Brown Bear and so many other stories to my daughters and and enjoying his bright illustrations. Now, I am reading those same books to my granddaughter!
